Proton-Based Transistor Could Let Machines Communicate With Living Things

Materials scientists at the University of Washington have built a novel transistor that uses protons, creating a key piece for devices that can communicate directly with living things. The study is published online in the interdisciplinary journal Nature Communications.

Devices that connect with the human body's processes are being explored for biological sensing or for prosthetics, but they typically communicate using electrons, which are negatively charged particles, rather than protons, which are positively charged hydrogen atoms, or ions, which are atoms with positive or negative charge.

"So there's always this issue, a challenge, at the interface -- how does an electronic signal translate into an ionic signal, or vice versa?" said lead author Marco Rolandi, a UW assistant professor of materials science and engineering. "We found a biomaterial that is very good at conducting protons, and allows the potential to interface with living systems."

In the body, protons activate "on" and "off" switches and are key players in biological energy transfer. Ions open and close channels in the cell membrane to pump things in and out of the cell. Animals including humans use ions to flex their muscles and transmit brain signals. A machine that was compatible with a living system in this way could, in the short term, monitor such processes. Someday it could generate proton currents to control certain functions directly.

A first step toward this type of control is a transistor that can send pulses of proton current. The prototype device is a field-effect transistor, a basic type of transistor that includes a gate, a drain and a source terminal for the current. The UW prototype is the first such device to use protons. It measures about 5 microns wide, roughly a twentieth the width of a human hair.

"In our device large bioinspired molecules can move protons, and a proton current can be switched on and off, in a way that's completely analogous to an electronic current in any other field effect transistor," Rolandi said.

The device uses a modified form of the compound chitosan originally extracted from squid pen, a structure that survives from when squids had shells. The material is compatible with living things, is easily manufactured, and can be recycled from crab shells and squid pen discarded by the food industry.

First author Chao Zhong, a UW postdoctoral researcher, and second author Yingxin Deng, a UW graduate student, discovered that this form of chitosan works remarkably well at moving protons. The chitosan absorbs water and forms many hydrogen bonds; protons are then able to hop from one hydrogen bond to the next.

INFOSYS PLACEMENT PROCEDURE - NEW

As everybody knows Infosys is a leading IT company in the field of software development and engineering through a network of development centers in Asia, Europe, and North America.So candidates who want to get placed in the World IT giant must prepare themselves for their placement papers and Interview round questions.So i am providing you a sample Infosys Placement paper so please go through this before going to give the exam.

The whole Selection Process contains two section Aptitude test.
>Analytical & Logical reasoning:(30 question : 40 minutes)
>English section: (40 question : 35 minutes)

Friends they will not tell about any sectional cut off be careful about section cutoff. After Aptitude test there is a HR interview.
Study Materials:
>Verbal & Non verbal-R.S. Agarwal.
>Some Time’s CAT study materials.

Analytical & Logical reasoning
Friends I have not remembered the order of questions but I am telling the questions in such a order that I follow and I am sure that you also get advantage if you solve question in such order.
>Syllogism: (5 question) – Friends not only in Infosys but also in others first attempt this question. It is very easy to solve.
Question Pattern: Statement: All A is B. Some B is C.

Conclusion: I,II
You have no need to memories all the rule of R.S. Agrawal and even you have no need to draw vein Diagram to solve it, If you follow Time’s CAT materials. There is very simple rule in Time’s materials by which you can solve a syllogism with in 15 sec.

>Figure Series: (5 questions)- This is really very simple. For practice see RS Agrawal. But don’t waste too much time for it.
>Dice & Cube Problem:(5 questions)- In my apti the prob was like below:
A cube is given and is painted six side with six diff colors.
Red is adjacent of yellow and green.
Pink is opposite of yellow.
Brown is in the bottom face

Now Q:1)Which color is in the top face?
Q:2) Which color in the opposite face of Red?
But there may also come others pattern:
There is a cube and it is cut in 27/64/125 equals pieces of cube. Now two face is colored with black, two green, two red.
Q: No of cube which is painted three faces…No of Uncolored cube…..
Just see 3-5 Example from Agrwal It will come in ur hand.

>Puzzel: (5 questions) – Keep ur head cool for these question. I know puzzle makes everyone puzzeled. Read the question carefully draw the diagram, matrix and put the data one by one according to given information. I am sure that every one can solve it.
>Data Interpretation: (5 question) – A chart, graph, table will be given….and you have to solve some problem on statistics. It will too much time conserving section so do it at last…..and also follow the Option elimination process.

English Section:
>Two passages and 5 question from each passages: Do it at the last. And before reading the passage see the question one time.
>Sentence Correction: Be care about tense mistake, spelling mistake, using of pronoun…..
>Fill in the Blanks: Gain a details idea on preposition, phrase, idioms.
>Theme Detection.

HR Interview
Now the final section. The only one solution to crack the interview is keeping yourself cool. And always think that they are taking your Interview to select you , Not to reject you. Be friendly, polite with them……

First Interview
Me: Good afternoon sir, May I come in?
HR: Yes , and be seated.

HR: Which quality of leader do you find in your self.
Me: I told and explain them about 10 leadership quality with example.(This is common question in infosys)
HR: What is the crucial decision in your life that change your self?
Me: I told about my school life computer Education…and my interest on computer……
…..
…..
…..

So many questions on teamwork and leadership.

Sometimes they take two rounds of HR interview.So be prepared for that also.

Second interview

Me: …..
HR: How do you react when a misunderstanding is happened in a group work?
Me: ……
HR: give some example on you real life..
Me: …….
So many question on my daily life….
HR: what is your best subject?
Me: Physics.
HR: Tell me about Black Hole.
Me: give a cleared ideas.(they impressed)
Hr: Tell something on current Computer related physics.
Me: I told them the use of quantum theory on 6th generation computer. Actually I heard it from a seminar.
HR: (they are really too much hearing these and encouraged me to join all the seminars)

….
HR: So XYZ nice interview with you.
Me: Its my pleasure.(I shake hand with them)

I will hope this information will helpful to you and you will get the job in your dream company.

Facing the INTERVIEW

You have just been invited to an interview with your dream company. It does not matter where you went to school, the number of degrees you may hold, the experience you have or whom you know; if you are unable to do the interview successfully, you will not get the job.

Try following the tips below and you will not only be well prepared but also present yourself as a true professional.

Research the Company.

Do your homework, e.g. go to the company's website and read about their vision, mission, strategy, products, finances, departments, competitive advantages, competitors etc.etc. If the company does not have a web presence look them up at the library, call the Chambers of Commerce, and find out everything you can about them.

Prepare your Introduction & Key points.

The introductory speech is your two minute opportunity to enlighten the interviewer about yourself and what you have to offer.

- Be prepared to talk about any career changes you may have had.

- Make a list of your main strengths and the things you are currently

working on towards your professional growth, with examples of each.

- Be also prepared to talk about your weaknesses and how you are

trying to overcome them.

Smile, be natural and speak with confidence. Practice in front of the
mirror if necessary.

Identify Achievements

Employers want to know how hiring you will make their organisation better and contribute to their overall success. (Assuming you did your homework as suggested in point 1 you can offer examples of innovations, process improvements or revenue saving ideas that may be of interest).

Dress for Success.

The way you dress makes a statement about yourself. Avoid bright colours and loud jewellery. Regardless of the job that you are applying for, it is a good idea to wear a neat and clean suit, even in a casual business environment.

Good Timekeeping is Essential

Arrive at least 15 minutes early for your appointment. Besides ensuring
you are not rushed, use this time to learn more about the companyĆ¢€™s
ambience. Observe the company's employees as you sit in the lobby.

How do they look? Do they greet one another and say hello to you?

Are they smiling and happy or frazzled and frustrated?

Engage in a Dialogue.

Remember, a conversation is a two-way exchange. Be curious and ask
lots of questions to get a good understanding of how the company,
department and management operate. Ask about the job responsibilities
and company culture, e.g. Employee Recognition Programmes, opportunities for Personal and Professional development, current and future challenges of the position, etc. etc.

Be Open and Honest.

When responding to the employer's questions, tell the truth! If you made
a mistake, say it in a positive way, accept responsibility for it, and explain
how you have benefited from the experience & what you have learnt. Do
not pretend to be something that you are not, it will not work!

Do not talk Salary or Benefits.

The goal is to get as many options going as possible so do not talk about compensation at this stage, as it can be a knockout factor. Sell to the employer all that you can do for them. If they are interested they will make an offer and it is at that stage that you start negotiating those issues.

Take Responsibility!

Remember, 50% of the responsibility for the right job match is yours. You
are interviewing the employer just as they are interviewing you. After all if you are selected, you will be spending at least half of your waking day in this environment. So ensure that this is what you really want!

Grass in lawn grows equally thick and in a uniform rate. It takes 24 days for 70 cows and 60 days for 30 cows to eat the whole of the grass. How many cows are needed to eat the grass in 96 days.?

Ans: 20
g - grass at the beginning
r - rate at which grass grows, per day
y - rate at which one cow eats grass, per day
n - no of cows to eat the grass in 96 days
g + 24*r = 70 * 24 * y
g + 60*r = 30 * 60 * y
g + 96*r = n * 96 * y

SECTION III - ANALYSIS PROGRAM SEGMENTS
1) Here is the structure declaration of a doubly
linked list

struct dlink {
int nodeid;
struct dlink *next;
struct dlink *prev;
} dlink_t;

A pointer of the head of the linked list is maintained
as a global variable,
whose definition is
dlink_t *head;

The funtion remove_element(dlink_t *rp), needs to
remove the node pointed to
the rp and adjust the head.

The first node's prev and the last node's next are
NULL.

remove_element(dlink_t *rp)
{
rp->prev->next = rp->next;
rp->next->prev = rp->prev;
if( head == rp)
head = rp->next;

Which of the following statement is true about the
function remove_element

return NULL;
}

The first argument sp, is a pointer to a C string. The
second
argument, c, is a character. This function scarches
for the character
c, in the string. If it is found a pointer to that
location is returned
else NULL is returned.
